KC Dirtbags: April 2010

The History Behind the Name!

The Long Beach State baseball program started in 1954 and Dick Nen was their first player to make it to the Major League level.

In 1989, the Long Beach State "49ers" became known as the Long Beach State "Dirtbags." The unofficial nickname refers to the baseball program's "style of play and success against higher profile programs."

In 2003, two former Dirtbags made it to the major league level and each has commented about the unusual nickname (which is still regularly used to this date):

"Being a Dirtbag means giving one-hundred percent in everything you do...going all-out on every play, and always putting the team before yourself." -Bobby Crosby (Oakland A's).

"A Dirtbag is a style of playing the game of baseball. It is the type of player every team needs… Loves to play the game everyday… He maybe does not have all the skills of the greatest player, but his attitude and the way he commits himself to the game is what makes this Dirtbag great. Dealing with adversity is what completes being a Dirtbag. A team player at all times (hardnosed)." -Mike Gallo

There are thirty-three former Long Beach players who made it to the show!!

The 2010 Season Begins!

We are so excited to start the season with the awesome group of boys we have! They have worked really hard practicing this Spring and we hope they will continue to learn with each and every practice and game we have.

I truly feel like the luckiest coach to have such great families behind our team. Thank for allowing me to coach the KC Dirtbags and thanks to the other coaches who dedicate their time and energy into making each child succeed.

Reminders

The start of the season is fastly approaching!

Make sure everyone is getting their uniforms pulled together:
1. Jersey
2. White pants with belt loops
3. Black belt
4. Black socks
5. Hat (with sponsor logo embroidered on it)
6. Protective cup

Registration forms and league fees are due at our next practice.

Practices are updated on the sidebar and I will also email reminders. If the weather is bad or if the ground is saturated, please check the rainout line.
